Aquiares Estate - not just a coffee, but a way of life. This small town, over 130 years old, is home to the unique Esperanza F1 coffee varietal and is a community knitted together by coffee production. As the Costa Ricans say “¡Pura vida!”, so say I: because each sip of this honey processed boi is delivering pure life with it’s sweet, nutty, chocolatey flavour profile.

The Aquiares Estate is not just a farm, it is a small town where 1,800 people live and work, and is a glowing model of sustainable agriculture. Founded in 1890 by Alfonso Robelo, a political exile who had a vision for transforming the relationship between landowner and farm workers by offering homes to the 200 employees to increase security and pride of the working community. The Estate, often referred to as Aquiares Coffee and Community, is now managed by Alfonso’s son, Diego, and continues to be a trailblazer amongst speciality coffee circles with a focus on carbon neutrality, agroforestry, soil health, biological corridors for wildlife wellbeing, and is a centre for environmental and agricultural research. It also continues to be a model for care and commitment to the workforce and the benefits of that.
This coffee is an F1 hybrid variety called Esperanza, which is unique to Aquiares. F1s are first generation hybrids, which offer more “hybrid vigour” or qualities that present as being better at things like disease resistance and yield. Esperanza translates to “hope” in English as this variety provides hope to the future of coffee farming in an ever-changing climate. This lot was honey processed and solar dried on raised beds for 18-24 days.
POSTAGE
Currently, we roast every Monday and carry out our quality control, analysis and packaging on Tuesday. We ship everything from Tuesday-Friday and orders placed after 12 noon on Friday will be fulfilled the following week. All our coffees are shipped as whole beans unless requested otherwise in the 'notes' section at checkout. We send everything via Royal Mail. Please get in touch with us if your coffee hasn’t arrived within 10 days of your order.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Our cans are made from tin plate steel and therefore can be reused or recycled infinitely. We encourage you to reuse this can as much as you...can. Get it? 'Can' has more than one meaning. We offer a discount in-store when you refill your can. You can also refill at selected wholesale partners where available. No wholesale partner in your area? Let us know and we'll work on changing that. You can also now refill your can online - just select ‘refill’ from the drop-down menu. The cans can also be upcycled, or if you've accumulated too many they can be recycled infinitely.
